Main Entrance Derby City General Hospital

Derby is currently undergoing the biggest ever investment in healthcare in the city. The new first class £334million hospital has officially opened on the former Derby City General Hospital site and will serve a population of over 600,000 people in and around Southern Derbyshire.

The Royal Derby Hospital provides the very latest in modern healthcare, bringing together specialist services for the first time in Derby's history and it marks the beginning of a new era of healthcare provision for the people of Derbyshire and beyond.

The new hospital will continue to build on the city's reputation as a high-performing Trust. Derby Hospitals are recognised by the Department of Health as a high performing Trust (Healthcare Commission ratings 2008 - excellent for use of resources and good quality of service) and is one of the cleanest and safest hospitals in the country.

Nursing staff

The Royal Derby Hospital will continue to build on these strengths through the continued delivery of first class healthcare and excellent patient care. The hospital consists of 1159 beds and 35 operating theatres.

Patient accommodation has been designed to meet modern infection control and privacy and dignity standards and will is superior to many hospital facilities offered in the UK to date. Together with the Derby Medical School, run in partnership with the University of Nottingham, the new hospital has become one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK.
